How does renal disease cause bad breath?
Kidney sickness or kidney disease is a medical condition in which kidneys cannot function properly. As we all know, kidneys are the important “filters” of the whole body, which are responsible for removing wastes and toxins out of the body. Among these wasteful products, there is a wastes called urea nitrogen, the end produce of protein metabolism. However, when kidneys are damaged to certain degree, wastes cannot be discharged, including urea nitrogen. When urea nitrogen cannot be expelled timely and fully, they will build up in the blood, leading to high blood urea nitrogen (BUN).
Once these wastes in intestine and stomach break down, they will produce ammonia. Ammonia will stimulate intestinal mucosa and make patients have a strange taste in their mouth, namely ammonia-like taste.
All in all, the very root cause of the condition is decreased glomerular filtration rate, namely renal function. Therefore, it is important to take measures for improving kidney function.
