Questions: I was diagnosed with acute kidney failure and the creatinine level is 450ummol/l. Do I need dialysis?
Answers: I am glad to receive your email. Your creatinine is above the normal level. but it is not the only evaluator for dialysis. Whether you need dialysis or not should depend on your own condition.
Do you know what is acute kidney failure? It is characterized by sharp decrease of kidney function. Kidney is responsible for filtering the waste products and toxins in the blood. Creatinine is one of the waste products in our body. So when the kidney function is decreased, the creatinine level will be elevated.
Dialysis acts as an artificial kidney which can replace the lost ability of kidneys. It can help kidney discharge the waste product and toxins. So it is effective for high creatinine level.
Not all acute kidney failure with high creatinine level need dialysis. If you accompanied by oliguria or anuria for more than 24-48 hours and the creatinine is above 442ummol/l, you are suggested to do dialysis. However, if the creatinine level goes to over 884ummol/l, you should do dialysis immediately.
All in all, whether dialysis is needed or not depends on your own illness condition. You can send your medical report to renal-disease@hotmail.com , the doctor will give you some suggestions.
