Basics of Nephrotic SyndromeNephrotic Syndrome is usually caused by glomerular injury of your kidneys. Massive proteinuria, severe swelling(edema), hypoproteinemia and hyperlipidemia are usually the four most typical symptoms.

Causes

In general, the disease can be divided into primary and secondary. Study shows that the former are related to immune changes of cells, lipid metabolism disorder, changes of clotting factors and so on.

And causes of the latter include:

1. Infection

Bacterial infections, such as streptococcal infection, leprosy, syphilis, tuberculosis, etc; Virus infection, such as hepatitis B, infectious mononucleosis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), etc.

2. Drug abuse

For example, anti-inflammatory drugs or antibiotics.

3. Systemic disease

Systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, allergic purpura, amyloidosis and so on.

4. Metabolic disease

Diabetes, thyroid disorder.

5. Genetic disease

Congenital or familial Nephrotic Syndrome, alport syndrome, sickle cell anemia, etc.

6. Others

Malignant glomerulonephritis, minimal change disease, renal artery stenosis and so on.

Prevention

To avoid the occurrence of this disease, people should do as the followings:

Pay attention to diet, strengthen physique and improve immunity.

Avoid toxic substances, harmful drugs and chemicals.

Prevent infections, various diseases and complications.

Prognosis

The prognosis of Nephrotic Syndrome are different from individuals. And it mainly includes three parts:

1. Pathological type

Generally, the prognosis of minimal change disease and mild mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis are relatively good. The prognosis of focal segmental glomerular sclerosis(FSGS) and severe mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis are relatively bad, if not treated well, the disease can develop into chronic kidney failure in a short time.

2. Clinical factors

Massive proteinuria, high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia can promote glomerular sclerosis, if the above factors are not controlled well, there may be bad effects.

3. The prognosis of patients with recurrent infection, thromboembolic complications are relatively poor.
