Is Drinking Water Good for CKD PatientsAs the old adage goes, water is the source of our lives. And water is also can be regarded as the best “cleaner” of the our body. Well then, is drinking water good for chronic kidney disease patients?

To be frank, whether you can drink much water or not depends on your illness condition. According to GFR ( glomerular filtration rate), kidney disease is divided into five stages and each stages have different diet limitations.

A person with stage 1 and 2 kidney disease has a normal or slight decline of renal function and in general, patients don’t experience symptoms or complications because our kidney has a strong compensatory ability and half of kidney function can guarantee our body health. People who is in the both stages, patients are suggested to drink water because the kidney still play the function of regulating and balancing fluid in the body. What’s more, drinking water can be discharged the toxins from the body by increasing urine output.

While for patients who are in other stages of kidney disease like stage 3, stage 4 or stage 5, they need to limit intake of the water since their kidneys has got moderated or severe kidney damage. Patients begin to suffer from the some symptoms such as swelling in ankles, proteinuria, blood urine and so on. In this case, if patients drink a lot of water, the edema or swelling can be aggravated. The fluid remain in your body will also increase the blood volume, which will impact on blood vessels walls and cause high blood pressure. So limiting your fluid intake is very essential for patients with advanced kidney damage.

Therefore, it is also necessary to know how much water you can intake in a day. If you have no idea about how much water you can drink, please keep in touch with your dietitian.
