Does Egg White Cause Kidney StonesWhen diagnosed with kidney stones, one of main treatment is surgery which is applied to remove the stones in the kidneys. Besides, generally, patients are suggested to keep a healthy and proper diet. There is a question: does egg white cause kidney stones?

Actually, kidney stones can be caused by numerous factors including age, sex, diet, abnormal metabolism, blockage of urinary tract, infection and side effects of medicines and so on. To be frank, the stones can aggravate inflammation and scar kidney tissues if left untreated.

Kidney stones not only can cause the pain but also damage kidney health constantly. Once kidney damage is formed, patients are prone to suffer from high creatinine level, proteinuria, blood in urine and so on. In order to relieve the symptoms and well control the progression of illness condition, patients are usually suggested to have low-protein diet, so as to reduce the burden of the kidneys.

Well then, can egg white cause kidney stones?

As we all know, egg is the good source of protein. Compared to egg yolk, egg white contains more high-quality protein which is recommended to patients with kidney damage. Egg white protein itself will not promote kidney stones, while animal protein from muscles will promote kidney stones. Egg protein is pH neutral and is not going to release as much calcium from bones as muscle protein, which is acid and thus requires bone buffering after ingestion. Therefore, egg white can not cause kidney stones, but what I want to the stress is that you should have a proper amount egg white intake so as to reduce the kidneys’ burden.

Every 100g egg white contains 10g protein, 0.1 g fat, calcium 19mg, phosphorus 16mg, iron 0.3mg, calcium 19mg, carbohydrate 1g, etc. On average an egg weights 50g and can provide 7g protein. Protein supplement for patients at early stages of kidney disease is 0.6-0.8g/kg.d. How much egg white to eat depends on patients’ specific condition and the extent of proteinuria. Your doctor will give you some diet suggestions.
