It is well known that both low-protein and low-sodium diet are recommended to patients with Stage 3 CKD, which is characterized by the moderate decline of renal function. But there is a common question that disturb the patients: how much protein and sodium should I take with stage 3 kidney disease?
Normally, the kidneys do many things to keep the body working properly. The kidneys remove wastes and extra from the blood and make urine. They balance the sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus-that circulate in the blood. And they control the release of natural chemicals called hormones that help make red blood cells, control blood pressure and keep bone strong. However, when the kidneys don’t work normally, patients will suffer from numerous symptoms like proteinurine, swelling, high blood pressure, fatigue, poor appetite and so on. And for stage 3 kidney disease patients, their kidneys have been damaged moderately. Compared with stage 4 and stage 5 kidney disease, stage 3 kidney disease is not serious and proper and healthy diet can play significant role in protecting renal function.
Well then, how much protein and sodium should I take with stage 3 kidney disease?
If you’re in stages 1, 2, or 3, your protein intake may be limited to 12 to15 percent of your calorie intake each day. This is the same level recommended by the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for a healthy diet for normal adults. If you’re in stage 4 of CKD, your dietitian may advise you to reduce protein to 10 percent of daily calorie intake. And the salt intake should be controlled within 3-6g per day.
Through the above analysis, we can see that different kidney disease patients have different rectrctions on the diet. For an individualized diet plan, please talk with our online doctors or leave a message below. By the way, simply diet is not enough to reverse stage 3 kidney disease. So we do recommend natural treatment like Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy, Medicated Bath, etc to you.
