Diet Chart for End Stage Renal DiseaseEnd stage renal disease is the final stage of kidney disease which need to depend on dialysis to sustain life when renal function declines down 10% or even less. To get a good diagnosis, aside from effective medical treatment, a scientific and healthy diet plan plays a significant role in protecting remaining function.

Right amount of protein

Protein is an essential nutrient for the body health. For end stage renal disease patients, due to loss of protein in urine, patients are suggested to have a right amount of protein intake. What I want to stress is that choose high-quality protein sources, such as lean meat, fish, egg white and so on. To get the right amount of protein, ask your doctor or dietitian directly. You will probably need more protein while you are on dialysis than you did before you started dialysis.

Have a low salt intake

Changes in sodium levels determine the amount of fluid your body retains and in turn, influences your blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure, it is even more important for you to be careful with the amount if salt you eat. Generally speaking, the total sodium intake every day should exceed 5g to 6g. And the pure sodium intake should keep within 3g.

To limit fluids

According to your illness condition, consult your doctor how much fluid you can drink. Be aware that some fruits and vegetables contain a lot of water and will count in your fluid intake. What’s more, especially when you have severe swelling.

To limit potassium

Choose low-potassium fruits such as tangerines, blueberries, grapefruit, strawberries, and cherries.

Choose low-potassium vegetables such as peas, cauliflower, corn, kale, cabbage and asparagus.

To limit phosphorus

Follow your food plan to know how much milk and milk products you can have. Avoid cola drinks and avoid bran breads or bran cereals.
