Eid al-Fitr, also called Feast of Breaking the Fast is an important religious holiday celebrate by Muslims and it also marks the conclusion of Ramadan. The religious Eid is a single day during which Muslims are not permitted to fast. However, patients with kidney disease, they also should keep alert even though they are spending the festival. Here are five eating tips for renal disease patients during Eid.
First, have a correct fluid intake
Having a right amount intake of water is very important for all kidney disease patients. Pre-dialysis kidney patients should drink 2-3 liters of fluid per day if the volume of urine they pass is within the normal rate, otherwise they should reduce their fluid intake to avoid water retention that could affect the heart and lungs. Hemodialsysi patients should be careful not to drink more than one liter of fluid daily, so as to reduce kidney’s burden.
Second, regulate protein intake
Chronic Kidney Disease patients should maintain a diet low in protein--rich food to avoid imposing extra burden on their kidneys that could lead to complete renal failure and increase urea in their system. Therefore, a low protein diet is very important to protect remaining renal function. In the contrary, dialysis patients need to increase protein intake, especially animal proteins, in order to compensate for the proteins lost in the dialysis process.
Third, avoid the high-salt diet and spicy food
In order to keep blood pressure within the normal range, patients have to develop a low-salt diet. In addition, a low-salt diet contributes to reducing swelling or edema for renal disease patients. So, if some food are high in salt, just keep it away from yourself.
Last but not least, they should be aware of the quantities of fluid they consume and reduce their intake of sweets and fatty foods as they are more prone to cardiovascular diseases.
All in all, we sincerely hope every patient can spend Eid happily and safely. To know more available information, please feel free to email us to renal-disease@hotmail.com. Eid Mubarak!
