Dietotherapy does play a vital role in treating chronic kidney disease. But due to various dietary restrictions, most patients do not know what food they can eat. It’s OK and let’s find available suggestion below!
Salt intake
Salt is the most common source of sodium in our daily diet. Stage 5 CKD patients need to eat less salt, as too much salt will elevate their blood pressure and trigger fluid retention. For kidney failure patients with high sodium level, 2 grams of sodium is recommended a day.
Protein intake
protein intake volume should be controlled among 1.0 to 1.2 g/kg/day. For patients who have dialysis everyday lose lots of nutrient substances such as protein and vitamin, so lack of protein will lead to malnutrition. For example, a patient who is 60kg should make his protein intake 70-80g/day. And the proportion of animal protein and plant protein is 6:4.
Fluid intake
For stage 4 kidney failure patients who are suggested to limited fluid intake or on dialysis, soup will be calculated into the proper fluid intake.
Other minerals intake
Then the change of electrolyte also decides the patient’s life. The chaos of electrolyte will lead to the abnormality of metabolism of patients, such as the rise of creatinine and the BUN, the deterioration of anemia and kidney failure. The diet adjustment of electrolyte is quite important. Each person has his own physical condition thus the adjustment is individual and specific.
For patients who has acidosis should have more vegetables and less soda and seafood.
For patients with low calcium should have more food contain calcium, such as milk and bone soup.
For patients with high phosphorus should have less nuts, such as walnuts, almond and melon seeds. And try to have less food contains protein.
For patients with high potassium are not allowed to take food with high potassium, such as raisin, orange, banana and dates.
