Stage 5 chronic kidney disease: The Healthy DietIn stage 5 chronic kidney disease, the kidney function is severely declined. So an healthy diet is important to save the residual kidney function and prevent further damage. The followings are the diet suggestions for patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease.

Low-protein diet.

Protein is the necessary nutrition of our body. Patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease should follow a low-protein diet. There are two reasons. One is that high-protein diet will increase proteinuria, which is a common symptom of stge 5 chronic kidney disease. The damage glomerulus cannot protect protein in the blood, and it will leak out into the urine, resulting in proteinuria. The other reason is that high-protein diet will increase the burden of kidney because protein will produce some waste products, like urea nitrogen, which should be filtered out by kidneys. There will be more waste products with high-protein diet.

Low-salt diet.

Patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease should follow a low-salt diet. Salt is the rich source of sodium. High sodium will increase the risk of high blood pressure, which will further damage the kidney. In addition, high-sodium can also lead to swelling because of water-sodium retention. The damaged kidneys cannot remove the extra sodium and water. When they combine, water-sodium retention will form. So you are suggested to avoid high-sodium foods in your daily life, such as processed foods, fast foods, salted foods and restaurant foods.

Low-phosphorus diet.

Patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease may suffer from high level of phosphorus in blood test. Kidneys fail to keep balance of electrolyte. If you take too much phosphorus, there will be more phosphorus in your blood. Which will cause more damage to kidney. You are suggested to limit phosphorus to 1000mg. But for exact amount for yourself, you should consult your doctor in detail or you can ask the online doctor.
