Daily food is a necessary part of our life, and the same to patients with PKD. However, for stage 3 PKD patients, there are many restrictions on their diet so that they can not eat anything freely. Well then, what is the diet principles for them?
PKD, short for polycystic kidney disease, is characterized by multiple fluid-filled cysts on the kidneys. When the illness condition develops into 3 stage, it means that renal function is 30-59 ml/min, which indicates that there is moderate damage on kidney. Over time, patients’ illness condition can become more worse and worse. If left untreated, renal cysts will also experience the following periods: growth period, swelling period, ulceration period and uremia period. In the early period, you can shrink kidney cyst through the scientific and healthy diet. Generally speaking, Stage 3 PKD patients are suggested to have the following diet principles.
A low-protein diet
Due to renal cysts, kidney gets damage and it fails to remove the extra metabolic products from our body. Eating too much protein will increase the workload of kidneys and speed up the progression of kidney damage. However, protein is also important to our body, so you can consume some food with high quality protein. How much you can consume protein needs to depend on your illness condition. If you happen to be stage 3 PKD, you are suggested to consume 0.8 g/ KG/ day protein.
A low-salt diet
Damaged kidney fails to function properly, and water retention will occur. In this case, if you eating much sodium, swelling or high blood pressure will become more serious. In severe condition, sodium can stimulate the renal cysts and cause cysts rupture.
A low-potassium and low-phosphorus diet
Along with decline of renal function, kidneys can not keep the electrolyte balance. And the kidneys are less able to regulate the phosphorus and potassium levels in the body. Therefore, a low-potassium and low-phosphorus diet are recommended to you.
However, not all polycystic kidney disease patients are suitable for such a diet, you can send your medical report to our renal-disease@hotmail.com and we will help you find out an individualized diet plane for you.
