A healthy diet is helpful in managing the overall health of our body. For patients with PKD(polycystic kidney disease), a healthy diet is especially important for it can delay the progression of this disease and control the symptoms. So what is the healthy diet for patients with PKD?
Diet is recognised as the best natural treatment for patients with PKD. If you are troubled by PKD, you are suggested to consult your doctor for diet suggestions or you can ask the online doctors. The followings are some dietary suggestions.
You should follow a low-protein diet.
Protein will break down into urea, which is the waste product that the kidney should remove. However, kidney damage with PKD does not allow kidney doing this job and too much urea accumulate in kidney will put strains on kidney and cause more kidney damage. Besides, overmuch protein will increase proteinuria, which is a common symptom of PKD. So you are suggested to follow a low-protein diet to reduce the burden of kidney.
However, if you are on dialysis, you should ask your doctor for the right amount for you should increase the amount of protein properly. High-quality protein is recommended because it produce less waste product and can provide enough nutritions that our body needs.
You should follow a low-salt diet.
Patient with PKD may be disturbed by swelling for the kidney cannot keep balance of sodium and cannot remove the extra water as well. Salt contains much sodium and a low-salt diet can ease the condition of water-sodium retention.
High blood pressure is also a complication of PKD. It is a high risk of further kidney damage. High-sodium will increase the risk of high blood pressure. So low-salt diet is helpful to low high blood pressure and reduce the risk of further kidney damage.
Besides low-sodium and low-protein diet, you’d better go on a low-phosphorus and low-potassium diet if you are diagnosed with high phosphorus and potassium level. Rich vitamins should also be supplied. For more information about the healthy diet for patients with PKD, you can email to renal-disease@hotmail.com!
