Dietary Tips for Malnutrition in Dialysis Patients

1. Enough supply of protein

Generally, the intake of protein can be kept at 1.0-1,4g/(kg·d) per day. For example, if the patients’ body weight is 60kg, the daily intake of protein should be 60-80g.

2. Sufficient intake of calory

In general, the supplement of calory should be 30-35kcal/(kg·d). Meanwhile, the contents should be carbohydrate-based, in addition, a certain amount of fat is also essential, and the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids and saturated fatty acids can be 1-2:1.

3. Intake of sodium, potassium and phosphorus

For people with swelling and high blood pressure, the daily intake of sodium can be 500-1500mg/d, potassium intake 400-800mg/d, phosphorus intake 500-700mg/d. In addition, they should eat less or not eat table salt, egg yolk, internal organs, dairy products and so on.

4. Trace elements and vitamins

Supply a certain amount of trace elements and vitamins are very important. For example, they can eat some fresh fruits and vegetables. However, foods like oranges, apples, potatoes, etc should be limited, as they are loaded with potassium. Additionally, iron supplements and vitamin D are also essential.

5. The control of fluid intake

For people with urine, the weight body should not be elevated. As excess water will aggravate the burden of heart and heart failure, which is unfavorable for dialysis patients.
