FSGS stands for Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis. We know that kidneys contain millions of tiny filters called “glomeruli”. The glomeruli works as strainers, they can filter waste products and harmful substances. When these filters are damaged they become scarred. And they can not filter appropriately in the end. This is called “glomerulosclerosis”.
Focal = a few
Segmental =sectional
Glomeruli=filtering capability
Sclerosis=scarred
Causes
Generally speaking, FSGS can be divided into two big categories, primary and secondary. Primary means that the disease happens without obvious symptoms. Secondary means that the disease was caused by other conditions.
The followings are some inducing factors of secondary FSGS:
Congenital diseases
Obesity
Sickle Cell kidney disease
Viruses (such as HIV)
Prevention
Do regular exercises.
Low-salt diet, control the intake of salt.
High quality protein diet and avoid soybean products.
Quit smoking and refrain from drinking.
Avoid spicy foods, seafood, meat, etc. These foods can stimulate the kidneys.
Prognosis
As primary prognosis is difficult to treat, most patients with FSGS will eventually develop into total renal failure. And they need to stay alive with the help of dialysis or a kidney transplant.
FSGS can relapse soon after the kidney transplant. Most patients will show symptoms within the first year after transplant.
