FSGS is a common type of Nephrotic Syndrome in both adults and children. When kidneys are damaged, the kidneys will fail to work. In early time, patients with this disease will present unobvious symptoms. Over time, they may experience the following conditions:
Swelling, or edema in different parts of the body(around the eyes, hands, legs and feet). The swellings can be painful and it may lead to rapid weight gain.
High blood pressure, or hypertension, is also a common symptom. In FSGS patients, high blood pressure are always difficult to control.
Protein in urine. FSGS is often first identified by monitoring the amount of protein in the urine. In general, there is only a small amount of urine in the urine. But when the kidneys are damaged, they can “filter” protein into the urine. If too much protein are detected in your urine during a routine checkup, it usually reveals something is wrong with the strainers. And this is related to the occurrence of foamy urine.
High creatinine level in the blood. Everyone has a certain amount of creatinine in their blood. Under normal conditions, the creatinine level stays low. When the kidneys are damaged, the creatinine level will increase. If the creatinine level continues to goes up, it means that kidney functions are declining, therefore early and proper treatment is necessary.
Other symptoms may include:
High cholesterol level
Poor appetite
Nausea and vomiting
