Diet for FSGS Patients with 70 Percent Kidney FunctioningPatients with FSGS have many dietary restrictions due to decline of renal function. And different patients will have different requirements due to different illness conditions. For FSGS patients with 70% of kidney function, what diet is suitable for patients?

All in all, different patients must have different needs. But there are some basic points that FSGS patients will need to know.

Adjustment for protein

0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight is needed everyday for healthy people. For FSGS patients, if their illness is in stage 3-4, 0.4-0.6 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight is necessary a day. However, if their illness has developed to stage 5 and meanwhile they have not started dialysis, 0.2 gram of protein is needed per kilogram of body weight per day. As for dialysis patients, much more protein (1.2g/kilogram/day) will be needed as some of the protein are lost during the process of dialysis. In conclusion, the recommend value of protein intake is 0.4-0.6g for FSGS patients with 70% of renal function.

A low-fat diet

In some cases, FSGS presents as Nephrotic Syndrome which is marked by serious leakage of protein. Under such a condition, they need to have a low-fat diet by excluding greasy foods from their table.

Low-salt diet

For FSGS patients, eating too much salt will worsen their swelling symptoms and also aggravate their high blood pressure. In this case, they should add less salt while whey they are cooking. Besides, when they eat out, they need to keep far away from high salted foods, such as pickles, bacon, processed foods and salt eggs and so on.

In addition to the mentioned above, if patients find their phosphorus and potassium level are higher than the normal range, they also should limit intake of phosphorus and potassium so as to protect renal function.
